Symbol of Indian Rupee

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the design, which includes both the Devnagiri 'Ra' and the Roman capital 'R' and has two parallel lines running at the top. The parallel lines symbolize the equal to sign. With this India will join an elite group of countries (like the US dollar, euro, British pound and Japanese yen) which have a distinct currency symbol. The symbol selected has been designed by an Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay postgraduate D Udaya Kumar and was selected from among five short listed symbols. Kumar, who will join the Department of Design at IIT Guwahati on Friday, explained that the design is based on the Indian Tricolour. His entry was chosen from 3,000 designs competing for the currency symbol. He will get an award of Rs 2.5 lakh. All new notes will now bear the symbol.

Noose tightening for Politicos in Sohrabuddin case

Sohrab case getting murkier with CBI stepping up pressure on top Gujarat IPS Officers P.C.Pande, O.P.Mathur and Geeta Johri for their suspected involvement in scuttling the probe at the behest of former Gujarat Minister of State for home Amit Shah. Two Rajasthan BJP leaders Gulabchand Kataria and Om Mathur are also facing the CBI heat. Sohrabuddin Sheikh was killed in a fake encounter and his wife who was a witness to her husband’s abduction was also later eliminated. The agency is investigating the police-politico nexus behind the killings. Amit Shah resigned and later arrested by CBI.

NAC for food security in 2000 blocks

The National Advisory Council (NAC) met the Food Ministry, when it recommended

extension of universal food entitlements to 2000 of either the poorest districts or the poorest blocks in the country. The project will be implemented throughout India on2015. 35 kg of grain at Rs. 3 a kg a household every month.

Valley stir

Following the imposition of curfew in wake of the protest by Syed Ali Geelani demanding the release of dozens of arrested separatist leaders, violence was triggered in the valley due to a spate of civilian killings by security personnel leading to an indefinite curfew being clamped in Srinagar. Educational institutions, shops, post offices, banks, public transport and other business establishments were closed as a precautionary measure. The protests are part of the separatists' 'Quit Kashmir' programme.

Wimbledon Championship 2010:

The 2010 Wimbledon Championships took place in Wimbledon, London, UK.

Rafael Nadal won his second Wimbledon title against Tomas Berdych and his 8th Grand Slam title. Serena Williams won the ladies tennis Wimbledon 2010 final against the Russian Vera Zvonareva and notched up her fourth Wimbledon win together with her 13th Grand Slam title. India's Leander Paes and Cara Black of Zimbabwe beat South African Wesley Moodie and Lisa Raymond of the US to win the Wimbledon mixed doubles title. With this victory, Paes surpassed his one-time doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi in winning the most Grand Slam titles for India. Paes now has six doubles and six mixed-doubles titles. Bhupathi has 11 Grand Slam titles -- four doubles and seven mixed doubles titles.
